People of Faith Activity: Saint Cristóbal Magallanes Jara

Saint Cristóbal Magallanes Jara, 1869–1927
May 21

Saint Cristóbal Magallanes Jara grew up in Mexico. When he was a boy, he was a shepherd. Later, as a priest, he tried to be like Jesus, the Good Shepherd. He took care of the people in his village by building schools, starting a newspaper, and training men to become priests. He was arrested on his way to say Mass at a farm. Some people thought that he was trying to rebel against the government so he was arrested on his way. He wasn’t, but he was killed anyway. Before he died, Saint Cristóbal forgave the people who killed him.

Discuss: How was Saint Cristóbal like Jesus?

Activity
Good Shepherd Charades

  • Ask: What did Saint Cristóbal do that showed he tried to be like Jesus, the Good Shepherd. (He took care of people, built schools, started a newspaper, and trained young men to become priests.)
  • Ask the children to name some ways that they can show they are trying to live like Jesus, the Good Shepherd. List their ideas on a white board or piece of chart paper.
  • Invite volunteers to silently act out one of the ideas from the list while the rest of the class guesses which one is being acted out.
