Saint Rabanus Maurus

780–856

Saint Rabanus Maurus, 780–856
February 4

Saint Rabanus Maurus was a German monk and teacher. He lived a very long time ago. He was one of the smartest men of his time. He studied many different things. He opened a special school to help other people learn, too. He wrote many books. One was about the whole universe. Another book helped people figure out the date for Easter. Saint Rabanus wanted us to know God better by learning about the things God created. You can see some of his books in the Vatican library.

Discuss: How can you know God better by learning about the things God created?

Saint Rabanus was well known for his works of charity. In addition to his many books, Rabanus also wrote poetry and hymns. Between his time as an abbot and as an archbishop, Rabanus was a hermit, living in solitude and prayer.

Activity
Write a Book
Verbal/Linguistic

Saint Rabanus wrote a book about the whole universe. Have the child write their own history of the universe based on what they’ve learned about creation.

  • Provide construction paper, drawing paper, and lined paper so that the child can write, illustrate, and bind their book.
  • Suggest that they re-read the first few chapters of Genesis.
  • Have them finish by describing where they belong in the universe.
