Saint Dismas was crucified at the same time as Jesus. He knew that he had done bad things. He asked forgiveness for all the things he stole. Then he asked Jesus to remember him in Heaven. Jesus told Saint Dismas that he would be with God in Paradise. Saint Dismas discovered that when we are sorry for our sins, God will always forgive us.

Discuss: What is the best way to let someone know you are sorry?

Two thieves were crucified at the same time as Jesus. One of them was named Dismas.

Dismas is the patron Saint of prisoners, undertakers, and repentant thieves. He is known as “the Good Thief” because he was sorry for his sins. The cities of San Dimas in California and Mexico are named after him. Dismas is often shown to Jesus’ right at the Crucifixion.

Activity

Apology Note
Verbal/Linguistic

Explain to the child that Saint Dismas was about to die with a lifetime of mistakes and sins behind him. But, he asked Jesus to forgive him, and Jesus promised him he was not only forgiven but would be in Paradise with Jesus after death. Everybody makes mistakes and sins, but it is important to ask God for forgiveness.

  • Without being too specific, ask the child to write an apology note to God. Ask him for forgiveness for all their sins and unkind words or actions.
  • Let them decorate with smiley faces, hearts, and fancy writing to show that they know they are forgiven and are loved by God.
