Saint Margaret of Scotland

1045–1093

Saint Margaret of Scotland, 1045–1093
November 16

Saint Margaret was a princess who was shipwrecked with her family near Scotland. She married Malcolm, the Scottish king, and became a queen. Margaret was rich, but she used her money to help others. She took care of children who didn’t have parents. She helped repair churches that were falling down. She even built a bridge so people didn’t have to wade in a river to cross it. Saint Margaret knew that the Earth’s goods were meant for the benefit of the whole human family, not just for some people.

Discuss: How does it feel when you give away something you own?

Saint Margaret is the patron of Scotland. She was a strong influence on her husband King Malcolm, whose court was very rough before she made changes. She died at Edinburgh Castle in 1093. People can still visit her chapel inside the castle grounds today

Activity
Why Worry?
Verbal/Linguistic

Most desires, such as for food, shelter, and loving relationships, are good and natural. But when we focus too much on material things, we can become selfish and even greedy. We may even begin to worry about things that are not really that important.

  • Read aloud the Scripture passage from Luke 12:22–31.
  • Ask your child to share what he/she thinks the message is. (Don’t worry; trust God. He will take care of our needs.)
  • Remind your child that people are more important than things.
  • Ask: Do you think our family has too much stuff? Do we tend to value things over people?
  • Talk about ways your family might change its attitude toward possessions and become more generous with one another and with others.
