Living Faith Today

Being Fully Alive

  • Marianne Diaz

St. Augustine claimed that the presence of God is more interior to us than we are to ourselves. God knows us better than we know ourselves. The tension between our true self who God calls us to be and the way we are currently living constantly calls us to transformation. The expression of God's basic desire for us is expressed in Jesus request that we "be perfect, as our heavenly Father is perfect." Our minds might run quickly to moral decisions that we make in our daily lives, but the "perfection" meant here is closer to "wholeness." God desires a life of holy and plentiful love for us. Perhaps Irenaeus of Lyon, an early Church Father, said it best when he claimed that "the glory of God is the human person fully alive."
