On Sunday, 19 firefighters were killed while fighting a wildfire blaze near Yarnell, Ariz. The men were part of an elite team of firefighters called the Hotshots. Despite intense training, heavy winds made the fire too volatile for the firefighters to survive. So far, the wildfire has consumed 200 homes and, as of Sunday night, was spread across 2,000 acres. It is one of the worst American wildfire disasters in decades.

"We're devastated. We just lost 19 of some of the finest people you'll ever meet," said fire chief Dan Fraijo.

We lift our hands in prayer for the lives lost, those left behind and the men and women who continue to fight the wildfire.

A prayer for the fallen

Lord, hold these fallen heroes in your loving hands. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they performed for us in our time of need. Let us find in your Son comfort in our sadness, certainty in our doubt, and courage to live through this hour. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

How you can help
